The 7 Most Impressive Libraries From Throughout History

Hmmmm, is the Hancock Town Library on that list??? Go find out here.

Author Jon Katz says...

....support your local library! Jon Katz is the author of many books (The Dogs of Bedlam Farm, Dog Days, Izzy & Lenore) about life on his farm in upstate New York and his dogs of all breeds. His new book is Soul of a Dog: Reflections on the Spirits of the Animals of Bedlam Farm. Here's what he had to say in one of his recent blog posts:

"Thursday September 10 is one of the highlights of the book tour, an appearance at 6:30 p.m. at "the best little library ever," the Monson Free Library, 2 High Street, Monson, MA, 01057 (413 267-3866). We live in a country that bails out banks and insurance companies but tosses libraries over the side. The Monson Free Library, along with so many others, is desperately needed in its community, and needs help to stave off budget cuts and continue to operate.

"Libraries are an invaluable part of our cultural fabric communities, and a country that abandons them loses some of its soul, I believe. Come and support the Monson Free Library if you can, and if you can't, please support your own local library. People use them more than ever and need them more than ever."

By the way, we have many of his books so come in and check them out!

Paradise Times Two: Living in Bali & Hancock

Wayan Suarni and Dick Nevell live in two "paradises": Hancock and the fabled island of Bali, Indonesia. Wayan is Balinese and came to America in 2000. She and Dick were married and have spent the past 9 years partly in NH and partly in Bali.

While in Bali, Wayan and Dick orchestrate the production of products for Hancock Baskets Inc. as well as importing, on a very small scale, other handicrafts and art made in Bali for their own business, The Pondok. In this process they have been practicing principles of Fair Trade, ensuring the people who make their products are paid fairly and work in safe environments. Wayan and Dick will give a brief talk about Bali, show some photos and video clips, and then entertain questions from the audience.

Wayan formerly worked in the Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women in Bali and currently runs her own garden maintenance business in Hancock - her own gardens were featured on the Hancock Woman's Club tour in July. Dick Nevell has been an author, film-maker & songwriter, receiving awards & grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and ASCAP. His book "A Time To Dance" and two films made on American Dance for PBS have been featured on the "Studs Terkel Almanac" on NPR and ABC's "Good Morning America".

Minutes from Trustee Meeting 7.29.09

Hancock Library Trustees Meeting
Minutes July 29, 2009
Present
Laurie Bryan, Mary Garland, Amy Markus, Peter Ryner

The meeting was called to order at 11:00 am.

The Minutes of June 24, 2009 were approved.
The Treasurer’s report was approved.

Director’s Report
Amy reported that the Library is presently focusing primarily upon children’s programs. There has been good steady use of the Library’s public computers. A special children’s reading program challenge that Amy created was going well and that as a result she would be coloring her hair pink. In early August work will start on planning for the Library’s 150th anniversary celebration, which will take place next year, in 2010. She suggested that the Trustees may wish to begin working on a fundraising plan. Friends of the Library’s book sale donations appear to be strong, and next year Amy will probably rent a larger storage shed. On Saturday, August 1 there will be a sheep dog demonstration behind the library.

New Business
Laurie reported the Board of Selectmen has requested a meeting with the Library Board of Trustees to discuss Budget and Maintenance items. It was agreed that Amy would obtain some professional assistance and Peter offered to also assist in creating a multi-year capital improvement plan.
There was a discussion of dates for the annual Volunteer lunch and Trustees need to inform Amy of their availability on either October 2 or October 9.

Old Business
Peter gave a brief report on the findings of his research on Tombstone Territory road and ownership of Library property. It was agreed that a similar verbal report should be presented to the Board of Selectmen at some future point.

It was agreed that there would be a brief special meeting on August 10th at 5:30 pm to discuss the August 10th meeting with the Board of Selectmen. The next full meeting of the Board will be on September 23 at 11:00 am.
