HOW TO DRAW A NEKKID MAN with Tricia Rose Burt

HANCOCK WRITER AND FEATURED MOTH STORYTELLER DEBUTS UPCOMING MEMOIR

Local writer, performer, and award-winning artist Tricia Rose Burt will read from her upcoming memoir How to Draw a Nekkid Man, at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Hancock Library.

How to Draw a Nekkid Man is based on Burt’s one-woman show of the same name (formerly called I Will Be Good), which was selected for the 2011 New
York International Fringe Festival and further honored to appear in the FringeNYC Encore Series. The show has toured New England and the South to critical acclaim.

Burt is a featured storyteller with The Moth, a national storytelling collective that The Wall Street Journal calls NYC’s “hippest, hottest, literary event.” She has appeared on the Peabody Award-winning radio show, The Moth Radio Hour, which is broadcast on more than 250 NPR stations nationwide. Her Moth podcast, “How to Draw a Nekkid Man,” was downloaded by more than a quarter million people.

A Southern girl who was raised to conform, Burt decided to take a different path. Her memoir, which is currently in development, takes the reader on her witty and poignant journey from corporate executive to contemporary artist.

“Tricia Rose Burt is a master storyteller who could make a grocery list sound interesting,” says Jamie Trowbridge, publisher of Yankee Magazine. “Her story reveals how life’s rare epiphanies can both elude and transform us, and Burt tells it with humor and power.”

Burt’s been a guest artist at the StoryCollider in Brooklyn and at the WOW CafĂ© Theater in Manhattan, and a visiting artist at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, NH. She performed at the 16th Annual Nantucket Film Festival as part of the popular signature program Late Night Storytelling, hosted by Anne Meara and Mike O’Malley.

This program is free and open to all thanks to the Friends of the Hancock Town Library.

In addition to performing and speaking engagements, Burt writes a weekly blog at www.triciaroseburt.com, and frequently contributes to BetterAfter50.com, a weekly online magazine.

Around the World on a Square-Rigged Ship with Jim Salmon

We all have those days, the days when we think to ourselves: “I wish I could just get away from it all.” Jim Salmon, author of Rime of the Ancient Underwriter, did much more than think these words in 2000 when he left his job as an insurance underwriter and embarked on a nineteen-month trip around the world. Rime of the Ancient Underwriter is the personal account of his journey on board the Picton Castle, a three-masted barque sailing out of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Jim weathered storms at sea and stormy relations aboard ship, tramped through a steamy Panamanian jungle, climbed the rarified summit of Kilimanjaro, and tracked wildlife on the high plains of East Africa and the Australian Outback. There are pirates and a mutiny, but mostly his account is about people, places, and the human condition as seen through the eyes of a corporate exec turned seafarer. These lively, witty and inclusive stories invite readers to explore their own uncharted waters. Jim Salmon, whose ancestors were also seafarers, lives in New Hampshire and continues to stay close to the water, spending his summers as a part-time schooner captain. This program is free and open to all thanks to the Friends of the Hancock Town Library.
