Rust Belt Boy – Readings by Paul Hertneky

Paul Hertneky will read new work from Rust Belt Boy -- true stories of a pivotal plateau on the colonial frontier, site of America's most prosperous Utopian community and a powerful company town, offering a personal escort into its steaming ethnic kitchens, raucous bars, and murderous steel mills. His narrative weaves an account of three centuries of visionaries exercising their will in a single place with the story of a child among immigrants, lavished with love, destined for the mills and torn between allegiance and adventure. As a freelance writer, Paul Hertneky has covered the US Culinary Olympic team, and written about food, culture, travel, the environment and the food industry for magazines, radio, television and the web. His work has appeared in anthologies, including Where the Mountain Stands Alone (edited by Howard Mansfield) and Best Travel Writing 2008, has won two James Beard Award nominations and a Solas Award for travel writing. Residing in Hancock for 18 years but originally from Pittsburgh, he has recently finished his first book-length work -- Rust Belt Boy -- a braided history and memoir of an industrial emigre.

Christine Halvorson turned a successful 25-year career as a professional writer into a career as one of the first professional bloggers in the country, and then as a social media consultant.

Preserving Your Memories on Digital Video with Dan Pickering

Old photos, recordings, and home videos are a treasure chest of stories and memories. But often they are scattered about in various boxes, drawers, and albums. And, in so many formats: prints, slides, vinyl records, audio tapes, memorabilia, 8mm movies, videotape, and now---digital media. This presentation will explore options for organizing, preserving, & creating a digital legacy that can be shared with friends and loved ones, now and in the future. Dan taught computer education, broadcasting, and video projects in the Michigan public schools for 31 years and continues his hobby/part-time occupation of video production at home in Hancock. He moved here with his wife, Sandra, in 2005 and they enjoy a quiet New England lifestyle of gardening, hiking, canoeing, and observing local wildlife near Willard Pond.
