Granny D: The Power of One
On December 31st, 1998, 88-year old Doris Haddock, known affectionately
as “Granny D”, set out to walk across America from a Santa Monica beach
in California to Washington, D.C. She undertook this feat in order to
draw attention to the need for national campaign finance reform and
because she believed that money in politics had betrayed our democracy.
She trekked over 1,000 miles of desert, climbed the Appalachian Range in
blizzard conditions and even skied 100 miles after a historic snowfall
made roadside walking impossible. As much as any soldier on the
battlefield, she was willing to give her life for her country’s highest
ideals. Actress Dixie Tymitz portrays the character of Granny D and her
incredible journey in this informative one-woman play. Free and open to
all.
